Pressure to build a lighthouse in this area began in the 1840's and although shipwrecks were frequent it wasn't until 1857 that the Absecon Lighthouse was built.  For ten months following, the first order Fresnel lens did it's job as there was not a single disaster.  Discontinued in 1933 the lighthouse now belongs to the state and restoration efforts are underway.  Built in 1857 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.   Issued 2000.  Lights via cord and night light bulb, included.  12"H.
